Lupin Beans

An Aussie Legend begins

Did you know Lupins have actually been around for thousands of years! Consumed throughout the Mediterranean region and the Andean mountains, lupins were eaten by the early Egyptian and pre-Incan people and were known to contribute to the fertility of soils.

During the 1960’s a very clever man named Dr John Gladstone from University of Western Australia (UWA), developed one of the first commercial lupin varieties especially for the Australian environment.

This breakthrough changed the agricultural landscape in Western Australia by allowing infertile sandy soils to be farmed in a brand new sustainable way. Lupins act as a natural fertiliser, introducing nitrogen into the soil, therefore reducing the need for chemical fertilisers.

This is why the lupins are one of Australia’s most important crops. Western Australia now grows 85% of the entire world’s entire sweet lupin supply, making them a truly iconic Aussie legume!

So far I have only added this to poached quinces and yoghurt, but it adds a nice crunch and ginger flavour. If I have it for breakfast, I will need to add some fruit and nuts, to boost the flavour a bit more.

I usually make my own muesli bars, but these are so much quicker and easier! Great taste, just like homemade. And no added nasties, just lots of goodness.

I was surprised to learn about Lupin Flakes. I'm in Tassie. My health food shop (Natures Works) has never heard about them. I sent a message to their head office. They have several shops in Tassie.
I make a wholegrain breakfast and soak it in milk overnight. Chia, Lindseed, Quinoa, Oats, Lupin Flakes with Blueberries, Raspberries and a banana. It is such a good breakfast.

We are coeliac and gluten intolerant family. Love baking with the flour, choc chip cookies, banana bread and adding to waffles and bread mix. The flakes make awesome Granola, overnight cereal and crumbing.

I have been on keto diet for 3 years and the crumbs for snitzels etc are expensive, not only are Lupin flakes cheaper but they are tasty and make excellent crumbed chicken, steak and cauliflour bakes. I love this product wish I found it sooner would have saved a lot of money.
